Developing Protocols for the Production of Clonal Seedlings of Seven Native Amazonian Timber Species - FINCyT/ FIDECOM

This project was originated in early 2012 with the purpose of developing protocols for clonal production of the best samples of forest species with high commercial value in the San Martin region: mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), cedar (Cedrela odorata), tornillo (Cedrelinga catenaeformis), capirona (Calycophyllum spruceanum), marupa (Simarouba amara), quinilla (Guazuma crinita) and estoraque (Myroxylon balsamun). This project came to fruition thanks to funding from the Research and Development Fund for Competitiveness (FIDECOM), led by the Ministry of Production and managed by FINCyT-the Science and Technology Program- and the Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP), our research partner.

In the years ahead, results achieved in applied technological innovation for forest plantations are expected to increase production of commercial timber by 60%, resembling the results obtained in other South American countries –such was the case of clonal production of teak in Brazil, Eucalyptus globulus in Chile and Eucalyptus urophylla x grandis, a hybrid species cultivated in Brazil.
